Das Schließen von Fenstern muss nicht immer über den Mausklick erfolgen. Unter Windows lassen sich Fenster schnell mit der Tastenkombination [Alt]+[F4] schließen. Sind mehrere Dateien, Fenster oder Tabs in einem Programm geöffnet, so kann über das Tastenkürzel [Strg]+[F4] die aktuell geöffnete Datei geschlossen werden, das Programm bleibt jedoch weiterhin geöffnet.

In vielen Programmen können geöffnete Dateien, Tabs oder Fenster auch über das Tastaturkürzel [Strg]+[W] geschlossen werden.

Shortcut des Tages: [Strg]+[Enter]

Den Auftakt in unserer Reihe “One Shortcut a Day” macht die Tastenkombination [Strg]+[Enter]. Mit [Strg]+[Enter] können sich vor allem E-Mail-Vielschreiber und Outlook-Intensivnutzer eine Menge Zeit sparen. Statt nach geschriebener E-Mail zur Maus zu wechseln und den “Senden” Knopf anzusteuern, kann das Tastenkürzel [Strg]+[Enter] zum sofortigen Versenden der E-Mail verwendet werden. Zack und weg ist die E-Mail!

In Excel kann mittels Tastenkombination [Strg]+[Enter] die Änderung in der aktuellen Zelle gleichzeitig auf alle markierten Zellen ausgeführt werden. Hat man wie im Screenshot gezeigt aus Versehen zwei Zellen in der dritten addiert statt subtrahiert, so kann man den kompletten Satz falscher Formeln markieren und nach Änderung des Plus in ein Minus mit [Strg]+[Enter] bestätigen. Dadurch wird die Änderung (das Minus) auf alle markierten Zellen übertragen.

In den gängigen Browsern Firefox, Opera oder Internet Explorer kann das Tastenkürzel [Strg]+[Enter] zur automatischen Vervollständigung von URLs verwendet werden. Gibt man beispielsweise “emendatio” gefolgt von [Strg]+[Enter] in der Adressleiste seines Browsers ein, so wird “emendatio” automatisch um “http://www.” und die Standard-Domainendung (zBsp. “.org”) zu “http://www.emendatio.org” vervollständigt.

Academicearth.org – How to catch up missed Lectures

These days i have received the link of academicearth.org. A site with “Thousands of video lectures from the world’s top scholars.”. Quite interesting i thought, and gave it a try with videos about:

Psycology:

History:

and Physics:

Like Rob, i’m an TED-addicted. Therefore it is really hard to convince me replacing my for-TED-preserved-time with ohter stuff. But academicearth definitely has the potential to do so. Beside speakers of Yale, MIT and Stanford, you’ll get access to lectures of Harvard, Berkeley and Princeton. Most of the lecutres can be downloaded as video (mp4) or audio (mp3) file or embed them in your site as we did. Votings and the creation of your favorites is possible as well.

Totally awesome! Especially for going much more deeper in detail than TED, academicearth.org is worth a look. No doubt, here comes not a TED-replacement, here comes a very valuable addition. Congrats to such an ambitious asimpressive project!

I hope we can see lectures from German univerities as well in the future. The Technical University of Ilmenau in Thuringia has experimented with lecture streams, but afaik there are no complete semestres available.

'www' – why waste words?

One thing that often confuses me when opening a website is when the main page of a domain can’t be reached without setting the ‘www’ in frot of the URL.

Why Waste Words?

I know that a domain without the ‘www’ isn’t automatically supposed to be forwarding to the word wide web presence, but IMHO it should be regarded as common to use a domain this way. When opening 200 websites a day, that saves you 200 seconds. Time enough to get yet another cup of espresso. And if i have to choose between another cup of espresso and typing ‘www’, i’ll stuck up with the first one. :-)

Fact is, for repetitive actions, using the mouse is the longest, most inefficient way to get it done.

I couldn’t agree more to this quote. What the assembly line has done for mass production is what shortcuts can do to our personal workflow. They reduce the time we have to spent with things that can be done smarter otherwise.

How to Organize My Documents and Private Folders

A question i’ve been dealing with many times is how to organize my files in an uncomplicated but also easy-to-work-with way. On Donationcoder there’s a discussion about the My Documents quest, read the entry here. Lifehacker has also some interesting thougts on organizing the very own files, worth to have a look.

The most popular approaches for doc orga are:

separating private/work/etc.

alphabetical ordering

time dependent (in progress/done)

labeled files (i.e. tag2find)

There might be no perfect soloution how to organize as this is a very personal decision. But even if you think about it just for some minutes and and can improve it a litte bit, your daily workflow can be pushed one more level forward.

By the way, in this article i stumbled uopn a useful tool: The Hard Drive Janitor. This litte script can delete files in a specified folder after a given period of time. So apply it to your temp or download folder and stop deleting install files and temp stuff you’ve just needed for some days.
